Parish offers Basilica tours for Balloon Fest

Basilica

The Evangelization Team of Prince of Peace Parish will lead tours of the Sts. Peter and Paul Basilica on Ash Street in Lewiston during the Great Falls Balloon Festival on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23. Offered free of charge, the tours will depart from the Basilica’s front steps on the half hour between 1 and 3 p.m. each day. A bus service will transport guests to and from the Festival grounds beginning at 12:45 p.m. A cafe on the downstairs level will offer refreshments after each tour.

Founded in 1870, Saints Peter and Paul Parish is the oldest parish of French-speaking Catholics in the Diocese of Portland. Construction of the church in its current form was completed in 1936. The second largest church in New England, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the Federal Department of the Interior in 1983, underwent significant restoration in the 1990s, and was named a Minor Basilica by the Holy See in 2004. For more information about the tours, contact Barbara Moran at 576-8619.
