Good n’ Plenty reunites for Dance Party Under the Stars II
Good n’ Plenty was a popular local band in the 1970s and ’80s. Members included (l. to r.) Nick Knowlton, Denny Breau, Debbie Morin, Billy Belskis, Kathy Haley, Greg Day, and Perry Morin.
Museum L-A will present its Dance Party Under the Stars II on Friday, September 7, from 7 to 11 p.m. After last year’s successful party on the roof of a downtown parking garage, many have been asking to do it again. This year’s event will take place at the site of the museum’s future home, located on the banks of the beautiful Androscoggin River near Simard/Payne Park and the footbridge that spans the river to Bonney Park in Auburn.
New president named for St. Mary’s Health System

Following an extensive nationwide search, Covenant Health has announced the appointment of Steven C. Jorgensen as president of St. Mary’s Health System in Lewiston and senior vice president of Covenant Health, effective immediately.
Most recently, Jorgensen was vice president for business development and chief operating officer for Essentia Health in Minnesota. In addition, he served in a variety of roles at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, including as head of human resources, administrator, and chair of clinical operations at the clinic’s Jacksonville location.
Welding sparks student interest at Lewiston Adult Education
Among those taking the fall 2017 Welding I class at LAE were Lewiston H.S. teachers Rebecca Spilecki and Terry Waite.
Welding II returns to Lewiston Adult Education this fall. The class, which begins September 6, will meet once a week for three hours, giving students an opportunity to gain valuable practice in this skilled trade. Topics covered will include metal inert gas welding (MIG), tungsten inert gas welding (TIG), and flux-cored arc welding. All students will receive a certificate documenting their hours of hands-on experience. The instructor will be John Clements.

Governor’s Address: The Right to Vote Is for Citizens
People don’t value the things they get for free. Giving legal residents who are not yet citizens the right to vote devalues becoming a citizen of our country.
Portland Mayor Ethan Strimling recently proposed that the City amend its charter to allow non-citizens to vote in Portland’s municipal elections.
I’ve written a letter to the mayor advising him that allowing non-citizens to vote is a clear violation of state law.
First, Maine law specifies that any person registering to vote must be a citizen. It states “[a] person who meets the following requirements may vote in any election in a municipality.” [Title 21-A ss. 111]
It then lists citizenship as criteria number one – quote: “the person must be a citizen of the United States.”
Senator Collins congratulates Auburn Police Chief Phil Crowell on retirement
During her Senate service, Senator Collins has worked with Chief Crowell on issues ranging from the opioid crisis to human trafficking.
At a recent retirement ceremony for Auburn Police Chief Phil Crowell, Jr., U.S. Senator Susan Collins delivered remarks congratulating him on his 25 years of distinguished service in law enforcement. Senator Collins also presented Chief Crowell with a flag that was flown over the U.S. Capitol. Crowell was recently appointed to be Auburn’s new Assistant City Manager.
L/A Festival Weekend offers dance party, Poutine, Greek food, and more
The popular annual Greek Festival features traditional Greek dinners, a la cart items, appetizers, Taverna beverages, and pastries and other desserts.
Museum L/A’s future home on Beech Street, the Gendron Franco Center on Oxford and Cedar Streets, and Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church on Hogan Road are three of the locations that will host parts of Lewiston-Auburn Festival Weekend 2018. The weekend’s events will include Museum L/A’s Dance Party Under the Stars II, the premier of the L/A Poutine Feast-ival & Pichenotte Tournament, and the annual two-day Lewiston-Auburn Greek Festival.
Native American Summer Market at Shaker Village
One of the only Maliseet basket makers in Maine, Master Basket Maker Fred Tomah has been making brown ash baskets for nearly 35 years.
Some of the state’s finest, award-winning Native American artists will be featured at the tenth annual Native American Summer Market at Shaker Village on Saturday, August 25, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Taking place at the world’s only active Shaker Community, Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in New Gloucester, this is the southernmost annual gathering of Wabanaki artists in Maine. Free and open to the public, this rain-or shine event provides a rare opportunity to learn about and experience aspects of Maine’s Native American culture.
Gypsy Lew Theater presents “Much Ado About Nothing” in Dufresne Plaza
This production of Shakespeare’s comedy about the romantic entanglements of soldiers just returned victorious from war is set in post-WWII Hawaii.
As part of Lewiston Public Library’s Ye Olde Shakespeare Week, Gypsy Lew Theater Company will present a “Shakespeare in the Plaza” production of “Much Ado About Nothing.” Free and open to the public, the outdoor performances will take place Thursday through Sunday, August 23 through 26, at 7 p.m. at Dufresne Plaza, located 72 Lisbon Street in Lewiston.
Bring blankets and chairs and grab a spot to watch the show. Some chairs will be provided. If it rains, performances will be moved inside to Lewiston Public Library’s Callahan Hall. Donations to support the company will be gratefully accepted.
Governor’s Address: The Universal Home Care Referendum will be disastrous for Maine’s economy
Ballot Question 1 is another benign-sounding, feel-good referendum. In reality, it’s one more in a long line of over-simplified referendums with a real downside for Maine’s economy.
Like the minimum wage referendum, which also changed how restaurant servers are paid, and the people’s veto question on ranked choice voting that was completely misleading, Question 1 lacks essential information.
It asks, “Do you want to create the Universal Home Care Program to provide home-based assistance to people with disabilities and senior citizens, regardless of income, funded by a new 3.8% tax on individuals and families with Maine wage and adjusted gross income above the amount subject to Social Security taxes, which is $128,400 in 2018?”
