Dollar General prepares to open area stores

Dollar General currently has five new stores under construction in southern Maine, including one each in Lewiston (1083 Sabattus Street), Auburn (807 Minot Avenue) and Turner (9 Buckfield Road). The company announced plans to expand its presence into the state in June of 2014 and currently anticipates opening its first store in the state by spring of 2015.

As the country’s largest small-box retailer, Dollar General will offer Maine residents convenient locations to purchase essential items at everyday low prices. They do this by providing a focused selection of national name brands and private brands of food, housewares, seasonal items, cleaning supplies, basic apparel and health and beauty products. The stores’ layouts are designed to make shopping simple for customers. Seasonal products are displayed in the center of the store, departments are easily recognizable with visible signage, and coolers are conveniently located at the front.

“Meeting our customers’ needs is our top priority when choosing store locations,” said Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development. “We generally serve customers within a three to five mile radius or ten minute drive, so we know convenience is a major factor in our customers’ shopping decisions. These new locations in Maine are a great fit for Dollar General and we look forward to being part of these communities.”

With over 11,500 retail locations and 100,000 employees throughout the country, Dollar General offers its employees opportunities to start and/or grow their career. Each store will employ approximately six to 10 employees, depending on the individual needs of the store. Anyone interested in joining one of America’s fastest-growing retailers may apply online at www.dollargeneral.com/careers.

Dollar General is also deeply involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education. Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded more than $97 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping more than 5.8 million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education.

The new store locations will allow nonprofit organizations, schools and literacy organizations within a 20-mile radius to apply for adult, summer, family and youth literacy grants. For more information about the Dollar General Literacy Foundation and its grant programs, see www.dgliteracy.com.

The Dollar General Literacy Foundation also supports customers interested in learning how to read, speak English or get their General Education Diploma (GED). At the cash register of every Dollar General store, customers may pick up a brochure with a postage-paid reply card that can be mailed in for a referral to a local organization that offers free literacy services.
