Public Theatre’s Manhattan Short Film Festival is this weekend

Here’s your chance to be a film critic! For one weekend only, Fri Sept 26 & Sat Sept 27 at 7:30, Sun Sept 28 at 4pm, the MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival comes to The Public Theatre in Lewiston. During a one week period, 10 short films from around the world will be screened in over 300 cities spanning six continents and each audience member will cast a vote for their favorite of the 10 short film finalists. Votes from each participating cinema will be submitted to festival headquarters and the winner will be announced. Past finalists have included nominees and winners of the Oscar in the short film category, so come and discover the next big filmmaker at The Public Theatre at 31 Maple St in Downtown Lewiston. Berman & Simmons marks 100th anniversary

Franco Center to host Open House
Located in the former St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Lewiston, the Franco Center will host a Community Open House on Thursday, October 2.
The Franco Center for Heritage and the Performing Arts will host a Community Open House on Thursday, October 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. Light refreshment will be served and a cash bar will available. The event will provide an opportunity to see the Center and to meet the new executive director, Mitch Thomas, as well as the staff and volunteers who help to operate the facility and its programs throughout the year.

Pages & Pints spotlights “Artwork of the American Beer Can”
Russ Phillips will discuss his book “CANNED! Artwork of the Modern American Beer Can” at Lewiston Public Library, followed by a tour and beer tasting at Baxter Brewing Co.
The Pages & Pints series at Lewiston Public Library will kick off with Maine author Russ Phillips on Saturday, September 27 at 6 p.m. This free public event will open in the Library’s Callahan Hall, where Phillips will discuss his book, “CANNED! Artwork of the Modern American Beer Can.” The evening will then continue with tours of Baxter Brewing Co., followed by a reception and beer tasting.
“North Woods Law” stars visit Wildlife Park
Several of the Maine Game Wardens who have appeared on Animal Planet’s popular “North Woods Law” will be on hand to meet visitors at the Maine Wildlife Park on Saturday.
You can meet some of the stars of Animal Planet’s popular TV show “North Woods Law” when they visit the Maine Wildlife Park this weekend on National Hunting and Fishing Day – Saturday, September 27 – from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
Park visitors will have an opportunity to meet Maine Game Wardens Troy Thibodeau, Jonathan Parker, Rick LaFlamme, Ethan Buck, Kris MacCabe, Alan Curtis, and Eric Blanchard and to ask them about their dangerous jobs and their appearances on the show.
Hampton Inn open for business in Lewiston
A group of owners, managers, and crew stand before the new 93-room Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn on Lincoln Street, which officially opened its doors last week.
Hampton Hotels, Hilton Worldwide‘s global brand of more than 1,900 mid-priced Hampton Inn, Hampton Inn & Suites, and Hampton by Hilton hotels, recently announced the official opening of its newest property, the 93-room Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn, located at 15 Lincoln Street in Lewiston.
“We are excited to join the Hampton family with the opening of Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn,” said Allison Beane, general manager, Hampton Inn Lewiston-Auburn. “Our business and leisure guests can expect a friendly staff and welcoming accommodations to make their stay enjoyable.”
Frumiento and Raby win Auburn Book Award
“Rainbow Flowers” by Ellena Frumiento and “Bee Nice” by Rebecca Raby are the co-winning works of the 2014 Auburn Book Award.
The co-winners of the 2014 Auburn Book Award are Ellena Frumiento, for her book “Rainbow Flowers,” and Rebecca Raby, for her book “Bee Nice.” The two authors created their winning works last year as sixth graders at East Auburn Community School and Fairview School, respectively.
Event launches effort to display bells of St. Louis Church
One of the four bells, cast in 1916 at the world-famous Paccard Bell Foundry of Annecy, France, is removed from the church’s tower last year following its shuttering by the Diocese of Portland.
Community members are invited to join Mayor Jonathan LaBonte, members of the Auburn City Council, and members of the original 1915 donor families for an “Exhibition of the Bells” of St. Louis Church on Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. The event will take place at Cote Crane Company, located at 2980 Hotel Road in Auburn.
The program will kick off a community campaign to raise $12,000 to purchase the bells and house them as part of a local heritage monument in the New Auburn neighborhood where they have touched the lives of so many for the past 100 years.
Friends group seeks donations to keep Lost Valley open
The Friends of Lost Valley hope to raise at least $50,000 to keep a single chairlift running at the beloved community resort this winter. To contribute, see www.crowdrise.com/savelostvalley.
Lost Valley Ski & Banquet is in peril. After years of operating in the red and facing the decline of its equipment and infrastructure, the resort lacks funds to open for business this winter, and without help will cease operations.
Lewiston F.D. marks 9/11
On Thursday, September 11, the Lewiston Fire Department will hold a ceremony at Central Fire Station in remembrance of the lives lost on 9/11 at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. A moment of silence and symbolic bell ringing will take place at 9:58 a.m. The Fire Department Chaplain will then recite the “Firefighters Prayer” and firefighters will present a wreath donated by the Lewiston Firefighters Association. Community attendance is welcome.
