Governor’s Address: We’re reforming our child welfare system to protect our children
The tragic deaths of two little girls under the watch of DHHS is spurring needed reforms to Maine’s child welfare system. This summer, I will call a special session of the Legislature to put the safety of our children first.
First, let me stress, if you suspect child abuse or neglect, please call 1-800-452-1999 — that’s 1-800-452-1999 — immediately to make a report. We cannot act on what we do not know.
The priority of Maine’s child welfare system should be doing what is in the best interests of the child.
I have personally experienced the trauma of an abusive home, and I want to ensure that we all do what we can to prevent future tragedies.
I’ve personally reviewed the case files of the two girls who were killed, but I’ve also reviewed many other cases that haven’t made the news.
We cannot eradicate evil; but we can do better to protect children.
Disc Golf Junior World Champion!
Landon Brooks, age 7, brings home the trophy in the Boys Ages 8 and Under Division.
At age 7, Landon Brooks of Turner has won the 2018 Professional Disc Golf Association’s Junior World Championship in the Boys Ages 8 and Under Division, recently contested in Emporia, Kansas. To bring home the title, Brooks beat a field of 11 of the best competitors in his age bracket in the world.
The contestants played through hot, humid, and occasionally windy weather conditions, with temperatures rising above 95 degrees each day of the four-day event. In the end, Brooks came away with a decisive five-stroke victory after the tournament’s 72 holes.
Brooks also won the world doubles title with his partner from Michigan. He is sponsored by MVP Disc Sports, California Krush, and Sabattus Disc Golf.
This was Brooks’ second individual Professional Disc Golf Association Junior World Championship. In 2016, he won the title in the Boys Ages 6 and Under Division, contested in Wisconsin.
Concerts on the Quad wrap up with Pete Kilpatrick Band
Singer-songwriter Pete Kilpatrick brings his band to Bates College for the season’s final Concert on the Quad on Thursday, August 2 at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to all. Named “Best Act” four times by the Portland Best Music Awards, Kilpatrickhas performed more than 1,400 shows and released seven albums, including 2016’’s “Echo.” Bring a picnic and chairs or blankets to the Historic Quad at Gomes Chapel, located at 275 College Avenue. Something for everyone at Moore Park Makers Fair
At the Car Show, Steven McCann will display his custom-made mini-monster truck.
From a car show with a mini monster truck to arts and crafts booths, pony rides, super heroes, a bouncy house, and great local foods, there will be something for everyone at this year’s Moore Park Makers Fair, taking place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 28 (rain date July 29). Moore Park is located on Route 26 in South Paris.
July Art Walk features ’cajun music, live art making
Painter Alexandra Hood will be among the numerous artists and artisans creating works on site.
Sylvain’s Acadian Aces will be the featured performers at this month’s Art Walk L/A on Friday, July 27. They’ll play live music at DuFresne Plaza, located at 72 Lisbon Street in Lewiston, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Patrons are encouraged to bring their own chairs.
Art Walk LA takes place on the final Friday of each month, from May through October, from 5 to 8 p.m. at numerous venues along Lisbon Street. All events are free and open to the public.
Governor’s Address: Democrats are holding tax conformity hostage to fund their elections with taxpayer dollars
It’s summer in Maine. We should be enjoying it. Instead, at the State House, “it’s deja vu all over again.” This Legislative session just won’t end.
Baseball legend Yogi Berra coined that phrase, and it’s never been more apt than during this revolving door of a session. Speaker Gideon cannot manage to wrap it up, and keeps adjourning for a few days with work left undone. Last week they came back, passed a couple bills, and dealt with vetoes. But they’ll have to return for more vetoes and remaining bills.
This is July; the session was supposed to end in April. This tells us that the Democrats were never serious about getting the necessary work done. They are only concerned about getting reelected – on your dime.
Bates Dance Festival Musicians’ Concert
Terrence Karn is among the Bates Dance Festival musicians who will perform at the festival’s popular annual Musicians’ Concert on Monday, July 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gendron Franco Center in Lewiston. Known for collaborating with choreographers to compose music for original dance, these accomplished musicians will perform original and improvised works that blend musical styles from around the globe. Local students receive Girl Scouts of Maine Future Leaders Scholarships

Three local students were among the six high school senior Girl Scouts selected by Girl Scouts of Maine recently to receive Future Leaders Scholarships.
Sierra Cummins of Monmouth, Emma Galipeau-Eldridge of Otisfield, and Bailee Kinney of Poland received the award recently at Girl Scouts of Maine’s inaugural Passion to Action event at the University of Southern Maine in Portland.
Young fiddlers to perform at Sawyer Memorial
Fiddlers Owen Kennedy, 13, and Josh White, 16, began playing together as a duo last spring with a crowd-pleasing, high-energy performance at the Alewife Festival in Damariscotta Mills.
Fiddlers Owen Kennedy, 13, and Josh White, 16, will perform at the Sawyer Memorial in Greene on Friday, July 27 at 2 and 7 p.m. Both shows are free and open to the public.
Owen Kennedy and Josh White are two up-and-coming traditional musicians whose lively arrangements take their listeners from Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes, over the sea to Eastern Europe, Ireland and Scotland, and back home to Maine. The boys have played together as part of the Maine Folque Co-op since 2015, when the group performed for the American Folk Festival in Bangor. Led by Cindy Larock and based in the Lewiston-Auburn area, the Maine Folque Co-op provides music for contradances and various special events.
CLT cast rehearses for “Young Frankenstein”

A talented cast of 27 is hard at work rehearsing for the upcoming Community Little Theatre production of the hit musical comedy “Young Frankenstein.” This award-winning musical, with book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Mel Brooks, is closely based on the 1974 Brooks and Gene Wilder-penned film of the same name. A parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures classic “Frankenstein,” it has been described by Brooks as his best film.
