Great Falls FCU collects Coats for Kids

Great Falls Federal Credit Union, at 34 Bates Street in Lewiston and 760 Minot Avenue in Auburn, is collecting donations of hats, mittens, scarves and jackets of all kinds for the 2015 Coats for Kids campaign. Collection boxes may be found in the lobbies of both branches through December 19. Open hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, plus 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday in Auburn.

YMCA names first Hall of Fame class

Four members of the Lewiston-Auburn community – Col. James G. Bouchles, Pauline Bourgoin, Richard Kendall and Malcolm Philbrook – will be recognized at the inaugural YMCA Hall of Fame Celebration on Thursday, December 3 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Martindale Country Club in Auburn.

Part of the Y’s annual meeting, the event will feature local speakers and multimedia presentations, as well as opportunities for networking and to congratulate the inductees and their families. Admission is free and open to the public; donations in honor of the 2015 Hall of Fame class will be gratefully accepted. Due to limited space, registration is requested by November 23. Auburn Econ. Development Director to retire

The City of Auburn has announced the retirement of Economic Development Director Roland Miller. Employed with the city for 35 years, Miller started work on January 7, 1980 as Director of the Community Development Department and was promoted to Economic Development Director in December of 2000. He will retire at the end of November.

A native of Wisconsin, Miller received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and later served on the school’s faculty. He served as the Deputy Director of the Community Development Department of Oshkosh, where he oversaw Planning, Grant Administration, Redevelopment, Housing, Codes and Ordinances and Transportation, and later as the Planning Analyst for the Portage County Area-wide Planning Committee in Stevens Point, Wisconsin.

“Earn While You Learn” CNA program graduates first cohort

Nine recent graduates of the Nursing Assistant course at the Maine College of Health Professions have passed the Maine competency examination. This group of students was the first accepted into Central Maine Healthcare’s new “Earn While You Learn” program. The cost of the program is paid by Central Maine Healthcare and students are paid to attend the program. They will work at CMMC, Rumford Hospital or Bridgton Hospital for at least two years.

Wildlife Park presents Halloween Fest

This popular annual event features a variety of fun and spooky activities for all ages. 

The Maine Wildlife Park will present their popular and growing annual Halloween Fest on Friday and Saturday, October 23 and 24, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Adults and kids alike should wear their costumes to get into the spooky spirit of Halloween while enjoying a crisp fall evening, when park staff and volunteers will stop at nothing to provide those attending with new thrills and chills.

Halloween Candy Buy-Back

Center Street Dental will host its fifth annual Halloween Candy Buy Back this year at an exciting new location: Norway Savings Bank Arena at 985 Turner Street in Auburn. When your little ones stop by on Sunday, November 1 between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m., not only will they receive $1 for every pound of candy they turn in, but their school will receive 50 cents, and their entire family will get to take part in a free public skate!

Also, if you need a place to bring those gently-used costumes your kids will never wear again, they’ll take those, too. All candy will be donated to our troops, while all costumes will be donated to the Auburn PAL Center. For more information, call 784-2211 or see www.centerstreetdental.net.

Fiddle-icious plays Franco Center this weekend

Fiddle-icious, the popular fiddle-based orchestra comprised of over 100 volunteer musicians, will make its annual Lewiston appearance in the Franco Center’s magnificent Performance Hall on Sunday, October 25 at 2 p.m. as the group embarks on its twelfth annual performance season.
