Red Cross seeks Real Heroes nominees
An off-duty first responder who comes to the aid of a neighborhood; a classroom volunteer who makes a significant impact on the lives of young students; a cashier who administers first aid when an elderly customer is injured in a fall…
Maine is full of good people doing great things to help others. If you know of a Good Samaritan who performed an extraordinary act of heroism or courage this year, the Red Cross wants to hear their story.
The Red Cross in Maine is now accepting nominations for its annual Real Heroes Award. This award recognizes Mainers who have committed acts of heroism, provided outstanding community service, and shown courage, kindness, and unselfish character in service to others. Past awards have been presented to military personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders, medical providers, teachers, teenagers, neighbors and everyday citizens.
Lavallee, Rowles support A-T Children’s Project
Allison Lavallee recently presented her friend, Emersyn Rowles, with a donation of $325 for the A-T Children’s Project to help fight the rare disease, Ataxia-Telangiectasia. For Allison’s birthday, she asked for donations in honor of her friend. The girls, now in the third grade, have been friends since kindergarten at McMahon School.
Public Theatre presents “A Christmas Carol”
The Public Theatre’s original adaptation of Dickens’ classic tale, featuring six actors and a fiddler, brings the holiday story to life in exciting new ways.
For one weekend only, Lewiston-Auburn’s professional theater company, The Public Theatre, will present their acclaimed original adaptation of Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol,” followed by a holiday sing-a-long featuring Christmas Carol fiddler Jennifer Armstrong, on Friday, December 12 at 7 p.m., Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. and Sunday, December 14 at 2 p.m.
Former Bruins lace up for PAL All-Star Game
Former Boston Bruins players will take to the Androscoggin Colisee ice for the annual Lewiston PAL All-Star Hockey Game on Friday, December 19.
The Lewiston Police Athletic League (PAL) will present its annual Lewiston PAL All-Star Hockey Game, featuring former Boston Bruins players, on Friday, December 19 at 7 p.m. at the Androscogging Bank Colisee in Lewiston. Now running for over a decade, the game has become a local tradition, last year bringing out a near capacity crowd to watch former Bruins, including Kenny “The Rat” Linseman, Reggie Lemelin and John Carter, take to the Colisee ice. In addition to the game, there will be opportunities for autographs and photos with the players.
French-language holiday sing-along

A special French-language holiday sing-along session will take place on Friday, December 12 at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at D’Youville Pavillion in Lewiston. The program is free and all are invited to attend. Songbooks will be available, so those who are unfamiliar with the songs or less-than-fluent in French may easily follow along.
Jacynthe Jacques, Aliette Couturier and friends will lead those attending in a selection of festive local holiday favorites, such as “Le P’tit Rene au Nez Rouge” and “Il Est Ne le Divin Enfant.” Providing musical accompaniment will be pianist Jeannette Gregoire.
Player of the Week
Central Maine Community College player Carrington Miller of Bingham was named the Yankee Conference Player of the Week recently. In a two-game span, Miller scored 47 points and grabbed 21 rebounds to lead the Mustangs to victories over Hampshire College and the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Miller is a second-year student in CMCC’s Physical Fitness Specialist program.
“Just Us” Family Christmas Show
The “Just Us” entertainers will sing favorite and non-traditional Christmas songs sure to please all ages at the Franco Center on Sunday, December 7.
The “Just Us” entertainers will present their 14th annual Family Christmas Show on Sunday, December 7 at 2 p.m. at the Franco Center in Lewiston. Just Us first performed at the Center in the summer of 2000 to raise funds for the erstwhile Festival de Joie. Since then, this multi-generational group, comprised of family members and friends who share a love of great music from all genres, have performed at the Center 32 times for various events.
Lost Valley a go for upcoming season
These new energy-efficient HKD Focus Tower Snow Guns are expected to save about $60,000 a year in energy costs. Along with an outpouring of community support, this will allow Lost Valley to open for its upcoming season.
Just weeks away from the start of its ski season, Lost Valley recently announced that it will in fact open its second chair lift this year, thanks to an outpouring of financial and in-kind support from the community This development means that the popular local ski area will be fully operational for opening day on December 19.
St. Mary’s CEO announces retirement
Lee Myles plans to retire in 2015.
Lee Myles, President and Chief Executive Officer at St. Mary’s Health System, recently announced his intention to retire during the coming year. Myles’ departure is expected by the end of 2015. During that time, a search process will recruit and select a new President and Chief Executive Officer for the Health System.
Myles has been with St. Mary’s since 1992, when he was hired as Vice President-Chief Operating Officer of the Medical Center. In 2006, he was named Chief Executive Officer of the Medical Center and in 2010 he was named President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Mary’s Health System.
MainStreet Foundation awards “$25K for Kids” grant to ACAC
The Androscoggin Children’s Advocacy Center (ACAC) has been named the 2014 recipient of Androscoggin Bank’s annual $25K for Kids grant.
Androscoggin Bank’s MainStreet Foundation has selected the Androscoggin Children’s Advocacy Center (ACAC) as the 2014 recipient of its annual $25K for Kids grant. The award was presented at the MainStreet Foundation’s annual meeting on November 20 at the Ramada Inn and Conference Center in Lewiston. In line with its mission to provide the three essentials of life – food, shelter and security – to as many children as possible, the grant was presented to ACAC to expand its support to children in Androscoggin, Oxford and Franklin counties who are victims of sexual abuse.
