Lisbon students give the gift of song

Franco Center hosts CD Release Party
Five-piece funk, classic rock and blues band Skosh celebrates the release of their new CD at the Franco Center on January 9.
The Franco Center in Lewiston will host Skosh’s CD Release Party on Friday, January 9 from 8 to 11:30 p.m. A five-piece funk, classic rock and blues band from Buckfield, Skosh is comprised of Jedidiah Allen on drums and vocals, Elijah Allen on bass and percussion, Tyler Russell on guitar and vocals, Sam Berce on guitar and Peter Richard on tenor and alto saxophones. The Portland Press Herald has described Skosh as playing “Phish-inspired tunes laced with the eclecticism that made rockers famous in the 1990s.” Also on the bill will be A Mighty Lion and Zealous Bellus.
CareerCenter hosts Job Fair on Jan. 5
The Lewiston CareerCenter will host a Job Fair on Monday, January 5 from 9 to 11 a.m. at its building on 5 Mollison Way in Lewiston. The more than 15 employers participating in the job fair will include All Temp Services, Inc., Arcadia New England, Bonney Staffing, Carbonite, Circle K, Great Falls Marketing, Homecare for ME, Industrial Roofing Companies, Kelly Services, Labor Ready, the Lewiston Police Department, Lowe’s, Opportunity Enterprises, Primerica Financial Services, Stericycle Communication Solutions, Support Solutions and Xerox Services.
All employers in attendance will be hiring. Positions will be available for customer care assistants, customer service representatives, financial advisors, retail assistants, construction laborers, manufacturing, medical billing, medical office reception, data entry, light industrial, roofers, laborers, foremen, personal support specialists (PSS), inbound telephone sales, technical support representatives and warehouse workers.
Those attending should bring a resume and be prepared to have an “interview-like” conversation with employers to discuss skills, knowledge areas and abilities. Job seekers should also be dressed for an interview.
French and Spanish interpreters will be available. Requests for other languages should be made in advance by calling the CareerCenter at 753-9094 by December 31.
Newell Family to play Room at Trinity
The Newell Family will bring their vast repertoire of American, British and European folk songs and tunes to the Room at Trinity on Saturday, January 10.
Ballads and fiddle tunes originating from Appalachia to Transylvania will rock Trinity Church when the Room at Trinity presents the Newell Family Band on Saturday, January 10. This three-generation group of musicians, led by Carter and Kaity Newell, have played their unique repertoire of New England, Maritime and British Isles music around Maine and beyond for three decades.
“LegoLandia” event to benefit Pettingill Park
The Lego creations of 13-year-old twins Emma and John Auer will be on display at a LegoLandia event to benefit the new Pettingill School Park on December 30 and 31.
Thirteen-year-old twins Emma and John Auer have been Lego enthusiasts for as long as they can remember, so when they moved to Lewiston with their parents recently, they brought their Lego city creations – completely intact – with them. Now they are rallying their young friends to help raise money for the new Pettingill School Park by organizing Lewiston’s first “LegoLandia” on Tuesday and Wednesday, December 30 and 31, at Lewiston Public Library.
Bishop announces new Lewiston assignments
Fr. D. Joseph Manship, chaplain at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion and St. Mary’s Residence, will retire as of January 1.
Effective December 28, Fr. Paul H. Dumais has been appointed as chaplain at St. Mary’s Regional Medical Center, St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion and St. Mary’s Residence, all located in Lewiston. He currently serves as a three quarter-time chaplain at Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC) in Lewiston and a quarter-time parochial vicar at Prince of Peace Parish in Lewiston. To ensure that adequate pastoral care is provided to patients at CMMC, Fr. Dumais, along with priests from local parishes, will continue to provide chaplaincy services at the hospital until a successor can be named.
Scouts offer Christmas tree pick-up
Members of Boy Scout Troop 121 of Auburn will pick up your discarded Christmas tree on January 10 or 11 for a minimum $5 donation.
For the third year, Boy Scout Troop 121 of Auburn will collect discarded Christmas trees and deliver them to local recycling centers in Auburn and Lewiston. While the cities of Auburn and Lewiston provide locations for free tree disposal, they no longer collect trees at curbside. For a minimum donation of $5, the scouts will pick up Christmas trees on the weekend of January 10 and 11. Trees must be at curbside for pick-up by the morning of January 10.
Berman & Simmons names new Managing Director
Craig Bramley
Attorney Craig Bramley of Cumberland has been named Managing Director at Berman & Simmons in Lewiston. Bramley specializes in representing patients in medical malpractice cases. He has teamed with attorney Julian Sweet for the past 15 years. Together they have won the two largest medical negligence awards in the history of Maine courts. Bramley is an integral part of the firm’s medical malpractice group and a leader in the use of computer technology for case preparation. He joined the firm in 1996 and has been a partner since 2007.
“Ugly Sweater Day” launches School Spirit Challenge at St. Dom’s
Students at Saint Dominic Academy recently participated in an “Ugly Sweater Dress Down Day” to kick off their participation in the WGME Channel 13 and Fox News School Spirit Challenge to benefit the Good Shepherd Food Bank.
The Ugly Sweater event garnered over $700 in donations, translating to over $5,600 of food for those in need, for the eight-week food drive that serves as a friendly competition between schools to show school pride and spirit, all while helping the community. The Challenge will culminate in an event at the school’s Auburn campus on February 6.
Agencies discuss lead abatement efforts at press conference
Representatives were on hand to discuss the roles of various partner agencies in the effort.
A press conference took place at Lewiston City Hall recently to discuss how federal grants received by the City of Lewiston, Healthy Androscoggin, Pine Tree Legal and the Lewiston School Department will be used to fund a multi-pronged effort to combat childhood lead poisoning in the Lewiston-Auburn area.
“Enough is enough; this is going to stop” said Lewiston Mayor Robert Macdonald about a problem that affected a reported 171 young children in Auburn and 507 young children in Lewiston from 2003 to 2012. At the event, various community partners outlined their roles in a plan to free local homes of hazardous substances, such as lead, and to cope with the medical, developmental and legal problems exposure to such substances can cause in young children.
