Experienced Lewiston H.S. teachers wrap up careers

Thursday, June 19 was the last day in public education for four teachers at Lewiston High School (LHS). Caroline Sample grew up in England and taught in London, Cameroon and Old Orchard before coming to LHS in 2006. Her experiences in Africa made her a great asset to the school’s ELL department, where she taught English to immigrant students. She leaves education with 41 years of experience.

Jean McPhail grew up in Bath and taught in Greene, Bath, Brunswick and South Portland before coming to LHS in 2000. While teaching Special Education for 14 years at LHS, she initiated a Children’s Story Hour and tutored children and adults in reading and math. She leaves education with 32 years of experience.

Helene St. Hilaire grew up in Auburn and taught at Southern Aroostook Community High School and Oak Hill High School before coming to LHS in 1985. While teaching French and Latin for 28 years at LHS, she served as an advisor for the Drama Club and the Class of 1995 and on the National Honor Society Advisory Committee. She retires with 33 years of experience.

Jean Roy grew up in Lewiston and taught at Mt. Blue and Lewiston High Schools. She taught French for one year before introducing the Spanish program at LHS in 1986. While teaching for 29 years at LHS, she served as an advisor of the Spanish Honor Society, chairperson for the district’s Certification Committee, officer of the Lewiston Education Association, and member of the MEA Board of Directors. She leaves education with 34 years of experience.
