LEWISTON, ME (July 20, 2022) — Musician Marc Black brings history to life through the songs of 1950s and 60s in his Boppa Chua Program, hosted at the Lewiston Public Library on Tuesday, August 2 at 5:30pm. This free, public program will take place in Callahan Hall and is directed towards adults though all ages may participate.

New York Blues Hall of Fame inductee, Marc Black, will be our guide through an evening of song, storytelling, and laughter through these two historically defining decades. We’ll celebrate wonderful songs as diverse as “Itsy Bitsy, Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini” and “Blowin’ in the Wind,” as well as tunes by artists ranging from Dean Martin to George Harrison. In addition to the music and conversation, this program features a slide show by Susan Black that is sure to slide our minds right back in time. Marc will also perform his own group’s top forty hit from his tour with The Doors, Neil Diamond, The Dave Clark Five and Van Morrison.

Marc Black is an eclectic folk-rocker who deals with life, and all its social and political challenges, one song at a time. Inducted into the New York Chapter of the Blues Hall of Fame in June of 2014, he has performed and recorded with many luminaries including Art Garfunkel, John Sebastian, Rick Danko, Richie Havens, Taj Mahal and Pete Seeger. He was chosen to play at one of the Levon Helm’s Midnight Rambles and was also named Folk Artist of the Year on ABC Radio.

While still in high school, Marc’s band, the Blades of Grass, reached the top forty performing alongside the biggest acts of the day including the Doors, Van Morrison and Neil Diamond. Marc also won the American Library Association Award for Best Children’s Album of the year for his production of American Children.

His song subjects have ranged from his love for the New York Mets to good coffee and just about everything in between. Marc’s guitar influences include the fingerstyle blues of Mississippi Hurt and Lightnin’ Hopkins while vocally you can hear his appreciation for Tim Hardin and Mose Allison. LEWISTON, ME (July 15, 2022) — Central Maine Medical Center’s Family Medicine Residency recognized seven third-year family medicine residents at their recent graduation program on June 23, 2022.

“This graduating class of family physicians spent slightly more than eight months practicing in a pre-pandemic world,” said John Alexander, MD, MHCM, FACEP, senior vice president, chief medical officer, Central Maine Healthcare. “Despite all of the upheaval in their training, and in healthcare in general, they are transitioning to full-time practice as highly qualified, and moreover, highly empathetic caregivers.”

AUBURN, ME (July 15, 2022) — On Tuesday, August 2 at 5:30PM, Festival Plaza and Main Street will be the scene of Auburn’s biggest and best block party of the year. Folks from across Auburn will join the APD in the heart of our beautiful downtown for food, fun, live music, and a family-friendly fun.

This is the 18th year that the Auburn PD has hosted National Night Out (NNO), which is a FREE, anti-crime, public safety event. Police department staff and community partners will serve up hotdogs, punch, and plenty of family style fun! There will be police, fire & public works staff and equipment at NNO, along with lots of local organizations, businesses, and community partners.

Other highlights will include LIVE music by the VERY popular L-A Harley Band, shooting hoops with local basketball legend Troy Barnies, free popcorn, games & activities, bounce house & inflatable obstacle course, balloons, and lots of giveaways.

AUBURN, ME (July 12, 2022) — Want to find a treasure? Have extra items to donate? The Woman’s Literary Union Garage Sale is for you! The WLU Garage Sale will be held on Saturday, July 23rd from 9am to 1pm at the Foss Mansion, 19 Elm Street, Auburn.

Sales and donations help restore the Foss Mansion. Built in 1914-1917, the Horatio Foss Mansion is a mix of Georgian revival and Spanish influence. The mansion was bequeathed to the WLU by Ella Foss in 1941. It is on the National Register of Historic Places and now available for rentals.

The WLU of Androscoggin County was organized in 1892. Early WLU projects included raising money for local playgrounds and parks, and promoting early childhood education and Kindergarten in the local school system. Today, the WLU holds events throughout the year to raise funds for scholarships and to support the Foss Mansion. One very popular event is the Prom Gown Giveaway. During prom season, the WLU makes girls’ dreams come true with free formal dresses, gowns and accessories.

LEWISTON, ME (July 1, 2022) — The First Amendment Museum joins the Lewiston Public Library on Monday, July 18, 2022 for a talk entitled “The First Amendment: 21st Century Edition”, featuring Maxwell Nosbisch, Manager of Visitor Experiences at the museum. This free, public program will take place at 5:30pm in Callahan Hall at the Lewiston Public Library with virtual participation options available on Zoom and Facebook.

The First Amendment to the Constitution protects our rights to religion, press, speech, assembly, and petition. In the changing political and cultural climate, it is not always clear what actions and statements are protected and which are considered censorship, hate speech, or illegal gatherings and forms of redress. In his presentation geared towards the general public, Maxwell will guide the audience through the First Amendment and what it means in these modern times followed by an interactive discussion with participants.

The First Amendment Museum, located in Augusta, Maine, is a relatively new, nonpartisan, nonprofit dedicated to promoting the understanding and use of the First Amendment in order to advance democracy so that all may reap the benefits.

LEWISTON, ME (July 1, 2022) — The University of Southern Maine’s Lewiston Campus will host a day-long gathering of veterans’ advocates from across Maine on Thursday.

The 10th Annual Maine Military & Community Network is scheduled to meet from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the campus located at 51 Westminster Street in Lewiston. The in-person event will also include a virtual link to the University of Maine at Augusta Campus in Bangor.

Gov. Janet Mills is expected to speak at the event, leading off a roster of speakers. Their focus is scheduled to be diversity, equity and inclusion.

“We are working to help chapters from across the state,” said Lorrie Spaulding, who serves as the director of Veterans Services at USM and as the community network’s Portland co-chair.

Topics during the day’s individual sessions will include homelessness, mental health and substance abuse, LGBTQ veterans and a discussion by a panel of Native American veterans.

“We are trying to spotlight some of the issues we are all dealing with and increase our cultural competence,” said Jerry DeWitt, who serves as the Lewiston co-chair.
