Energy Policies Must Drive Down Costs for Mainers
Environmental groups downplay our energy challenges because we did not see the catastrophic price increases we saw last winter. They couldn’t be more wrong.
Dear Maine Taxpayer,
We are not just trying to avoid price increases. We must lower energy costs to make our state competitive. High energy costs make it difficult for our businesses to compete or expand. When prices spike in the winter, some mills shut down to save on energy costs. We need to create jobs, not lose them because of high energy prices.

Androscoggin County Chamber chooses new helm
Following a lengthy national search by its board of directors, the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce has selected Matt Leonard, 39, from among 54 applicants as president and CEO. Leonard replaces outgoing helm Chip Morrison, beginning his term on May 11.
Leonard grew up in Maine but currently resides in San Diego, California, where he is completing his career as a senior executive advisor in the military.

Maine Gladiators Youth Hockey Team
The Maine Gladiators Squirt Tier II team completed their outstanding regular season at the New England District Super Regional Tournament in South Burlington, Vermont, earning a spot through their Maine State Championship win on March 8. Six states were represented and eight State Championship teams advanced to the Super Regional Tournament. The Maine Gladiators faced teams from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Vermont, finishing a proud second.

Welfare to Work Works and More Reform Makes it Better
Before we started reforming Maine’s welfare system in 2011, people could stay on “temporary” welfare for as long as they wanted.The rule for eligibility was: “When in doubt, hand it out.”

When I became Governor, I knew our welfare system needed to be fixed. We had too many people on the welfare rolls, and there was zero accountability.
We’ve worked with thousands of Mainers to help them become more self-reliant and economically independent. Our administration is willing to provide the time and effort it takes to help fellow Mainers.We have enacted a five-year cap on TANF benefits.But that isn’t the only solution.We now offer welfare recipients the opportunities and support they need to succeed.
CMMC physician receives national honor
Bruce E. Condit, M.D.
Bruce E. Condit, M.D., medical director of palliative care and an attending physician at Central Maine Medical Center is one of just five recipients of the 2015 Hastings Center Cunniff-Dixon Physician Awards. Condit has been recognized nationally for his work on behalf of those with serious illnesses in rural Maine.
The awards are cosponsored by The Hastings Center, a bioethics research institute that has done groundbreaking work on end-of-life decision-making, and the Cunniff-Dixon Foundation, which strives to enrich the doctor-patient relationship near the end of life. Duke University Divinity School’s Program in Medicine, Theology, and Culture oversees the selection process.
